Just a big pile of rocks

I live in the mountains. Painting mountains are difficult for me. I am not one of the people that views them and thinks that they are beautiful. I am one of the people that thinks they block the sunset (prairie girl). However, I am going to attempt a few mountain paintings.

Most photos of mountains are actually quite boring...all shades of blues, until they are lit up by morning or evening light, then things become interesting.

When the sun hits the mountain tops.

It always amazes me how brilliantly the setting sun can light up the mountains. Throw a foot of snow on this image and you would have our weather for today. 

I keep promising myself to take my pastels outside and make some color sketches but I am too busy currently chopping and bringing in wood for the furnace. I need someone to lay hands on Bruce and make him functional again (he hurt his back). I have to take a sick car to the mechanic today. Perhaps, I'll be lucky and get him into the clinic. That's about as amusing and technical as taking a cat to the vet.

The theme for the Pynelgos art show held during the Wings Over the Rockies event is "The Bugaboos". I chose to make a painting of a woman mountain climber. There were a few of them and they were fearless.

I am busy working on Christmas projects and paintings. I want to be able to enjoy the summer this year and not be madly painting for shows. Well, we'll see how that goes. I can't believe its going to be December! Where did 2011 go?

This is one of those paintings that doesn't photograph well. For some reason, my photo editor is really funny about picking up all the lovely purples.... Anyhow, I admire the effect when the late sun shines off of the snow peaks creating that lovely rosy look. Alpenglow, they call it.
