Chicks with Sticks 1 (1938)

I based this painting on a photo I saw in the Valley Pioneer, the local newspaper. I learned to enjoy hockey when my youngest daughter joined a team a few years back. I admired the toughness and speed of those young girls as they zipped and fell on the ice. And I'll admit I cried with pride when the Canadian women's hockey team took gold at the last olympics.

The girls in the photo were a team in Invermere in 1938. I believe the gal on the left would have been Doreen Lamond, a fiesty young woman who became an intriguing figure as she grew. If I understood her correctly, Doreen followed her husband to England in WW2 when so many people were fleeing the country. I can't decide if that was a lack of imagination or a surplus of spunk!

Wow, Paula! Whatever you didn't like about your beginning of this painting, you certainly fixed! It is so well balanced and fun to look at. I really like the style you are working in. And, too, your hearts look like so much fun to make! Nice work!
