Skunked

I have had the pleasant experience of being a neighbor to baby skunks. They were so darned cute. Plus, skunks like to eat rats, in case you are experiencing a rat invasion. Just don't make my husbands mistake of walking the dog in the dark and thinking that the skunk is just a black cat. Unfortunate consequences.

I love all the Mama deers and fawns I see on my walks and driving around town. I know they have become a plague in some towns. My heart still leaps every time I see one. I know they are wild animals and try to give them lots of space.

Buffy

I don't know why I want to call this guy Buffy, it's just the first goofy name to pop into my head. You can sometimes see mountain goats right beside the #1 highway at a salt lick near one of the tunnel entrances. It's not enough that that road is tricky and dangerous to begin with but people stop on the road to take photos of them. They are cool though. This amiable fellow came close to check me out at the Kamloops Wildlife park. This is one of a small animal series that I hope to have finished for the "Wings Over the Rockies" event in May.

The painting works better than the photo. I will have to try shooting this again. Jinx had a mouse for breakfast and still expected cat treats.

Two Deer SOLD

OK, I'm going to quit bragging but after so much famine, I was exulting in the feast. I hope this may give hope to other painters who are going through a dry time.

I love playing with molding paste, stamps and texture. The horizontal strips at the bottom are left over from another project and are a bit more textured in real life. The deer are our little brother and sister from the backyard.

Our provincial government has pretty much cut ALL funding to all art revenues as if the creative people aren't already suffering from the recession. I find this a very short-sighted view when statistics have backed up the fact that the arts generates economic spending! If we lose our local art councils because they cannot afford to stay open, where will the emerging artists (like me) be able to show their work and move their way up through the creative ladder? Sigh.

Causeway Series #1

I took a bunch of photos one evening as I sat on the dock looking back at the Victoria causeway. It was a beautiful evening with lots of strong yellow light. I am hoping to do a small series from the pictures. I am comtemplating going over this with a yellow glaze but I will try it on plastic first. The foreground and wall are the same color in the photo. I finally had to make that wall darker so that it would recede. Never trust a photo!

Working/not working

I have been working, although I was seduced by the beautiful warm weather of the last few days. Today it turned cold with a vengence and they are calling for snow!I saw this house on Whidbey Island last fall. I can just imagine the Captain's wife pacing on the balcony. It isn't working for me yet so I will live with it for a while. I have to set it aside and work on something for the Wings over the Rockies show instead.

The Heritage building

I made a 12x12 painting of the heritage building that sits on our property as a gift for a friend that is celebrating her 60th birthday. She has always been after me to paint it, so I painted it for her. Kirra insisted on being in the picture.

Trying to Paint

One of those days, everything that could go wrong goes sideways. I'm so frustrated I could bite the heads off of chickens. I made this painting yesterday, hated it, wiped a bunch of paint off and now I kind of like it. I may go back in a tinker a little, give it a couple coats of gloss finish and just live with it. I think I have artist's block.

I hate the weather (glum) too.
