Backyard neighbors

After a number of years, it is still a thrill to see these big beasts out by the back fence. They come at twilight and at dawn to check out the thistle patch. Unfortunately, I passed three dead by the side of the road on my trip to town yesterday. Slick roads, darkness and elk are a terrible combination. They have no car sense whatsoever. If you see one starting to cross the road, hit your emergency signal and slow the heck down. Once one crosses, all the others follow.

I don't know how they manage to sustain themselves in this hard weather, signs of digging for forage are everywhere.

Thanks for sharing this photo. How I miss the wildlife of the Columbia Valley (minus the cougars that is)! Enjoy your encounters...

Living out where I do, we see deer constantly. It always breaks my heart to see one of them dead on the side of the road and I get so danged angry at drivers. I agree; slow the heck down, people!
