S is for sassafras

I remember having sassafras tea when I was a kid. It was considered a spring tonic. Better than the sulfur and molasses that my Dad's generation were treated with! It had a remotely root beer flavor. It had been over harvested in our area and people were encouraged not to pick it. I wonder if it still exists now?

I drank sassafras at my grandparents' house and I so loved it. I remember the red bark like shavings in the cup...I don't remember it having a root beer flavor though...But I'm going to keep my eyes open for it and try it all over again!
