Barbie

4th February, 1959 : Today was the first day of the invention of the Barbie Doll. This doll was created by Ruth Handler, who was one of the founders of the Mattel Company. Barbie was named after Ruth’s daughter.

My mother never let me have a Barbie doll. I'm not sure why. She bought a larger fashion doll and commissioned a neighbor to make a beautiful wardrobe for her. I played with it right up until my teens.

I have a pinterest site where I have collected all the dolls I would like to have entitled "I never had a Barbie but I would want one like this".

I didn't have a Barbie either. I had a Tammy doll which I loved; she was built like a typical teenager. And over a 3 yr period, I had 3 outfits for her plus a great bedroom set -- canopy bed, wardrobe and 1 drawer chest. I never wanted a Barbie after Tammy came along. And although she was passed on to various sibblings et al, I managed to find her and a whole cartload of lovely outfits (and the bedroom furniture) about 5 years ago. I'm a happy reminiscer.

There was a Christmas when I was DYING for a Shirley Temple Doll. There was some kind of commemorative issue of a quite beautiful but affordable doll. I watched every film she made with my Grandmother on Saturday afternoons. My mother flat refused to buy one because she didn't like Shirley T when she was a little girl.
Instead she bought me a big-dress-up-in-real-kid-clothes doll who gave me the creeps. I never took her out of her box, which stayed in my closet like a freaking casket. Ew.
Know what you mean. I miss a doll I never had.

Jan, your doll story does sound kinda creepy. Sandy, I am going to have to look up Tammy dolls.

When I was four, I had my heart set on a beautiful bride doll that was in the window of a store in our little town. I was really hoping I would receive her for my birthday. My Mom had to break the news to me that the store had burned down and my lovely dream doll was consumed by the flames. I still think about her....

I remember drooling over the Sears catalog Christmas issue, looking at all the Barbies. My mother thought they were too, I don't know, grown up or slutty or something. My sister had a Tammy (she had nipples!), and my mom finally relented enough to get me a Midge, Barbie's freckle-faced friend. She was okay, but I was really spoiled when I got the New Dream House! Wish I still had that. A couple of years ago I bought myself the Classic 1962 brunette bubble hair Barbie, which was reissued! She's beautiful.

An almost lost memory ...
I had barbies, my first the year they came out! (Both grandmothers sewed for her, and I supplied the accessories.) I never warmed to her as a girl does to some dolls, but when Skipper came out (red haired and a friendlier, more girlish and freckled face) Barbie went to the doll shelf, and Skipper inherited a fabulous wardrobe! Loved that doll.
