Fresh Hope for a New Year

"Hope"    side 1 of a 12x12 diptych  SOLD

I hope everyone has a great New Years Eve. I am going to try to catch the fireworks in my hometown.

I have been working on my resolutions. I prefer to think of them as goals. They look increasingly familiar to the goals of the last few years...eat less, exercise more, swear less, think more, improve your art work, travel somewhere warm, take a good workshop...!

Has anybody got anything good to add?

In Progress

I think I will just let this sit and be away from it for a while. It always surprises me how much you can be involved in a painting and how blind you can be to what is going on it. Time and distance can often point out a lot of mistakes.

Indian Detour Couriers

I have started a painting based on this old photo.

The Indian Detour Couriers were accomplished young women that were hired to guide tours through New Mexico, I am quite fascinated by their stories. Check out their history here:  http://books.google.ca/books?id=jzR_PtaFNFoC&pg=PA111&lpg=PA111&dq=indian+detour+courier&source=bl&ots=m3OI3nUps6&sig=zHrTE8tgk4JhcW0QgBm2nvIznvc&hl=en&sa=X&ei=jhS_UpaLE9PdoAThjoHwAQ&ved=0CDIQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=indian%20detour%20courier&f=false
I think I would really have wanted to be a courier!

The first thing I did was drop one figure. I don't like their faces. I may knock back the santa fe logo and Indian detour images although I would like to keep them for the historic reference. I am, as usual, letting the source photo influence me rather too much but I hope to move beyond that. We will see. Could end up being a big old paint-over.

Visiting Fort Steele

A few years back I took part in the shows as one of the Fort Steele, BC Artists. A lady I met there commissioned me to make a small portrait of her grand daughters dressed for their visit. They were lovely. I was pleased with the outcome.

No LBD's for Christmas please

There is a time and place for the little black dress but I'm thinking...

Am I the only one with a dislike of black dresses for the holiday season? I don't care how slimming/sophisticated/etc. they are...

It's Christmas! Show some color..

Your Christmas party shouldn't look like a mafia funeral!

You may not need to go this far...

but maybe this far..

and I definitely like Cassie's idea...

Gelatin printing with the students of the Martin Morigeau school

A little late (it was held on October 18th) but what a great time we had! Big thanks to Principal Gail Rines, her helpers and especially the students who jumped in with gusto.

Boy, did they make me work!

French Housedress--vogue 8813

I made this pattern some time ago and learned from the mistakes I made then. This is a Marcy Tilton design and I like the flowing style of it. It feeds into my fondness for lagenlook. I scored about 6-8 metres of raw silk at a thrift store so I felt I had to use it up. I used huge vintage buttons on the pockets.

With a cashmere sweater and a silk scarf, I'm ready for cooler weather.

Happy All Saints Day!

A worn out were-lab

and an out of steam steampunker, worn out from handing out candy.

I just wanted to let people know that I may not be posting for a while. I am moving! I need to go get busy packing boxes. I don't know where we are moving to (that adds to the excitement!). We are hoping to settle near Invermere for the time being. When I get settled again, I will commence the blog. I must say I enjoyed what may have been my last Halloween in Canal Flats. The kids are respectful and good-natured and work hard on their costumes. We can whip down and see the fireworks at the community centre in under five minutes. I number of deer flitted across the driveway as we returned home. I will so miss it here.

Standing Ovation

From Sultana Island--Robert Genn

This post is to commemorate and thank Robert Genn. Genn has been an outstanding painter for years. He has also generously shared his art knowledge on his website:  clicks.robertgenn.com/
On his web this morning, he acknowledged that he has received a devastating health prognosis. My best wishes go out to him and his family.
